The Mighty Bill has Spoken

There are occassions when I get a little embarassed by certain fanatical Jazz fans; it isn't too common, but still happens often enough that I need to say something.  About a month ago, Bill Simmons said this:

we need to stop comparing Williams to Paul. It's just dumb. This is not Pacino versus De Niro. This is not Brady versus Manning. This isn't even Morris versus Slater. Williams has a chance to go down as one of the best point guards of his generation. Paul has a chance to go down as one of the best 25 players ever. Big difference.

Apparently this caused many Jazz fans to see red and immediately send some kind of hate mail to Bill.  While I think that claiming that Paul could be one of the best 25 is pretty ridiculous at this stage in his career, it is one idiot's opinion and when Jazz fans get in a lather about something it just draws more negative attention towards it.

Today, Bill opened his mailbag and we got to see this little nugget:

Q: You are a stupid (bleep) sucking (bleep) (bleep) licking dumb (bleep). I'm not dumb. You are. Don't you ever call me dumb again, you good for nothing (bleep). (Bleep) you! (Bleep)!
-- Bradley, Salt Lake City

SG: Four sentences, 31 words, seven bleeps. That's 4.3 words per bleep. Quite possibly a record for this column. Look, I'm sorry Deron Williams isn't as good as Chris Paul. I really am. You can keep sending me the stats of their head-to-head matchups if it makes you feel better. If you polled every non-Jazz player and non-Hornet and asked them if they'd rather play with Paul or Williams, Paul would win in a landslide. There hasn't been an NBA argument this dumb since everyone decided before the 1992 Finals that MJ and Clyde Drexler were on the same level and we needed to argue about them. Just stop.

This is when I start to get embarressed for Jazz fans.  This is the reason we get labeled as obnoxious freaks, rather than informed, intelligent fans.  We, as good Jazz fans, need to stop with the instant hatred of the "Paul is better" crowd.  A phrase comes to mind, "never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel."  Translation: don't act like an idiot when the guy has a large following, a national platform, and can spin it however he wants.  Let it go.  Bill likes to speak in superlatives and make wild comparisons, that's how he writes.  Let's all take a deep breath and get back to complaining about the lack of interior defense.

I hear you on this Scrum, but I was one of the many Jazz fans that emailed Mr. Simmons on this. I was not near as dramatic as this Jazz fan was but I did want my voice to be heard. I simply told Mr. Simmons, a fellow Patriot Homer, that this was the first time I disagreed with him. It's lame, just because CP3 has a bigger following does not mean he "wins" by a landslide. If D-Will had a Hornets jersey on (which makes me puke in my mouth) he would be given the upperhand from the Media. If any of those Chris Paul loving Media Members were Jazz fans they would realize how good D-Will really is. CP3 is good, errr great and I would be on his side if he were on the Jazz. However, until he wins a Ring the two are equal in my book. None of this Pearl Jam vs. Stone Temple Pilots B.S. like Mr. B.S. (interesting) said.
War Deron Williams being the Best Point Guard Ever to Play the Game of Basketball! (See, I'm not exagerating.)

Agreed...Sorry but I loved SG's comments in the MAG...I think he is right on. Do I regret the choice of the Jazz taking WIlliams instead of Paul, no.. But I believe Paul is a better player today, and looking back in 15 years he will be in the discussion as the best PG to have played the position.

My Fav 5.

1-Magic Johnson
2-John Stockton
3- Isiah Thomas
4-Steve Nash
5-Dennis Johnson

I don't even know who you are anymore pick-n-roll.

I, for one, am done with Bill Simmons. His extreme Boston bias and pompous attitude has worn me out. I am over it.

However. He is one funny bastard.

Just want to make a comment on the very last part of your post about "lack of interior defense". Last night as I watched Rasheed Wallace dismantle the Warriors single handedly in the final two minutes of their game, I noticed something very interesting. You know those NBA produced promo commercials, also TNT preview commercials, nearly half of the clips are of a player taking it to the hoop against the Jazz, no joke. After I first noticed this, I stayed up for an additional 30 minutes watching for the commercials, I kid you not, 13 of the 24 "highlights" I saw were of the Jazz being schooled at the rim. Sad. . .

Well said Scrum. Simmons is just one guy with his own opinions. No need to get all frustrated about what he says. I mostly don't think he knows a whole lot about sports, but I also mostly think he can make me laugh at least a little bit in whatever he writes (even if I don't agree with it, which is most the time).

Simmons is just one guys opinion on the debate and what it really comes down to is who gets a ring. If CP3 get his hornets to a ring before or more than D-Will does, he wins the debate in my eyes. Right now I am happy to say that they are equal with D-Will winning the head to head and CP3 winning the overall stats.

Agreed. Ring = Better Leader.

I would say CP3 is ahead of Deron in that department this season.

I miss full strenth Deron.
