Boozer to Opt Out
Written by Scrum

Boozer wants to be paid....again.  I suppose I don't blame him for wanting a bigger paycheck, but won't clubs see him as a constant injury threat?  In addition, his reputation isn't exactly stellar after the fiasco with the Cavaliers.  For those of you who don't remember what happened, I'll analogize it to the Jazz.  Imagine if Boozer said, "yeah, I'm opting out, but only to sign a deal with the Jazz again."  Great!  Thanks man!  Then as soon as he is a FA he signs with the Heat for more money.  That's pretty much what happened in Cleveland.  We shouldn't be mad at him, yet, for wanting to opt out, he is going to get a bigger deal and he can still re-sign with the Jazz.  But with the salary cap and luxury tax looming and Millsap's emergence, this might be the last season we have with Booz.

update: Kurt Kragthorpe has a great article in today's SL Trib

Pay his big black ass. He is a consistent 20 and 10 guy. Don't get me wrong he is a pansie ass bitch, But Milly is no Booz, We aren't a great team with out him..

I actually hope that the door does hit him in the ass on the way out. Good ridence I say. Your timing and choice of words for your declaration of free agency could not have been worse by the way. While the rest of the country is struggling to provide Christmas for their children you are letting the whole world know that 12.6 million is not enough by saying, "I'm opting out. No matter what, I'm going to get a raise regardless". I understand and can appreciate that Carlos wants to get his while he can, but dont be such a dux bag about it.

His attitude and me first mentallity have worn thin with me. The Jazz will not win a championship with Boozer so why not try and see if you can rebuild a little there. I know there are some who will point to the Jazz's 8-7 record with Carlos out of the lineup as proof that we are better team with him, but I say not so fast. It is more a reflection of Deron only being 85% and the boatload of turn-overs that the Jazz have been having. I hope that the Jazz trade his sorry ass before they get home from this trip.

There are a lot of teams what would want a player like Boozer

it's times like these that we really see how different fans see the game versus the players. We are devoted to our teams because it is an escape and because we like feeling like part of something larger. Most players (there are a few exceptions) see it as a paycheck, and THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. I don't expect loyalty from the players any more than I expect loyalty from management. Boozer wants to be paid what he's "worth," which most people believe is more than he is making now. It is impossible for the Jazz to get nothing in return because if he leaves, we have $12 million to spend somewhere else, which is a lot in NBA terms.

we have 12 million to spend elsewhere (don't know why it didn't display that...)

I wish I could miss work for several weeks, have the individual that fills in for me perform just as well as I do at my peak, and then demand a raise. I think we've just found out why Cleveland fans hate the Booze. It's all him all the time.

Guys, thanks for hosting the best blog out there--been reading your posts for about a year now. As for boozer, obviously we are a better team with the Boozer/Millsap combo, but I think that misses the point. We have been playing with house money with Millsap for a couple years now. I mean the guy is a steal as a backup and and regular HEIST as a starter. I think (hope) Jazz management approaches this analytically. I mean boozer is a consistent 20/10 guy, but a COMPLETE liability on D (seriously, I'm 33, overweight and balding and know, without hesitation, that I could drive the lane on Boozer). Furthermore, how many of Boozers 10/boards/night come on cheap-ass rebounds stolen from another player? Millsap, conversely, can play some shut-down D, even against bigger/stronger players. Likewise, his boards come in traffic, usually on the offensive glass, and can literally change games (see Nets, New Jersey). One of the reasons we struggle with Boozer out (other than the obvious D-Will issues) is that we have noone to back up Millsap. Dump boozer and snag a solid veteran big and we will be fine.

Sorry to drag on, but one quick humorous note. I have a buddy that grew up in Sitka, Alaska. Because of travel expense issues, visiting high school ball players would spend the night at the homes of locals after the game. Well, Boozer and another player ended up staying at my friend's home one night. The next next day, my buddy realized that one of the players had pissed in hisr sleeping bag and stolen his brother's stereo. I'm just sayin' . . .

How about this for a trade to be done right now.

C. Boozer and M. Almond to Orlando for Keith Bogans, Hedo Turkoglu and Brian Cook.

Bogans and Cook come off the books next year for the tune of about 6 mil and Turkgolu is cheap at 6 mil so you could move him in the off season or let Korver opt out and still have a sharp shooter on the team. Cook can come in and give you a few minutes as a back up big man. Boozer gets closer to home in Florida and the hell out of Utah.

Plus with Bogans and Turkoglu you could glue CJ miles to the bench with cray glue and cement. We would never have to see him on the court again.

Do you know how much crow I would heave to eat if I had to cheer for Turkadux? However, he is higher on my list than Boozer.

On a side not, if I hear one more player say he needs to do what's best for his family I am going to kill them.....with words. I hate that comment. Boozer, you make more money in one year that I will my entire life. Hell, you make more money than my entire immediate family will. ENOUGH OF THAT. I am not blaming Brewer for this, but I just heard Brewer on the radio talking about how Boozer needs to take care of his family. Eff that. Does that piss anyone else off? You are playing a game for millions. Do not insult people with that comment. In fact, just a hint, don't ever quote anything Latrell Sprewell has ever said.

And a final thought....for now. How awkward is it going to be when Boozer gets booed out of the building his first game back? Going to be ugly. (And somewhere Lakers fans will be heard saying how classless Jazz fans are.)

Yes, yes I did. it just took me until now to figure out that was a good trade for the Jazz. Should have given him props for the idea originally, but nonetheless I say do it.

You in no way gave enough credit to how big of a d-bag Boozer was the the Cavs. Not to mention how stupid he was not staying there to play with Lebron (not that D-Will is too shabby either to be fair). It's not the same as him opting out. He actually had to beg his blind (literally) owner to let him out of his contract so he could sign with the Cavs for more. Then as soon as he was let out of it at the clubs option, not his, he hightailed it to Utah.

You guys are asking for it if he leaves. You won't be able to replace his production with that 12MM you have free. I agree that he's a punk Duke-y but right now he's your 20/10 punk. Let him go, what do you get?

That trade is fine, but not going to get it done for your team, you would be instantly worse. Orlando on the other hand would be able to handle Cleveland and would be able to actually score with Boston. Boozer's D is awful, but how often does he really need to play it for the Jazz to win?
...
written by Hammy, December 19, 2008
Lots of good points Lee, but I actually think that Millsap can replace his 20-10 plus play a hell of a lot better D. The bigger issue then become who do we replace Millsap off the bench with. There is not doubt that getting rid of Boozer would hurt the Jazz in the short term, but I think long term it would be a better option to go ahead without him.

Milsap is a solid basketball player. He may be a 20/10 guy, but I'm thinking he's more likely a 17-18 and 8 guy, and there is a huge difference in those two things. He's playing 31 minutes already and is a 14.5 and 8.8. He is a MUCH better defensive player, but I think he's a lot like Carl Landry in that he's better off the bench not being the focus (Millsap is a much better defender than Landry too).

The big question is, what do you buy with your 12MM? If you are starting Millsap you obviously only spend 4-5 on a backup PF. But is there one out there for that price that you would want? Ideally you find a 7 footer that can play that and C because without Boozer frustrating the crap out of Yao on defense (and yes he only plays defense against the Rockets somehow) you are in for 35 and 15 from Yao.

Wow, just saw Millsap's "Last 5" and I see why you guys are so excited about him if Boozer leaves. I hold fast to him really being an 18 and 8 guy though.
Here's my question though. According to the link he's only under contract through this year. With games like these last five he is going to get PAID. You might have to give him all of that 12MM. Is that what you want?

Boozer's numbers are all well and good, but HE ISN'T PLAYING so who gives a rats. I want someone who will play and play through the pain. Not someone who would rather worry about what suit he will be wearing at tonight's game.

I'm betting we sew him up for 6 and 60, starting around 8.5 million. Prob a player option as well. That's a 1000% raise.
