Korver Opts In, Jazz In A Bind

Kyle Korver ended the suspense a day earlier, opting into his contract for next season. He will be paid $5 million next year. To note, he averaged 9.0 ppg and shot 38.6% from downtown last season. Is that worth $5 million?

More importantly, though, it's $5 million that the Jazz could've put into trying to keep the 'stars' (Booze, Okur, 'Sap) around. Instead, they're at the point where if Booze & Okur both opt in (highly, highly unlikely), it puts the Jazz at about $73 million in contracts for 11 players (counting Maynor). The luxury tax limit is expected to be between $68 million & $71 million. And you are required, by league rules, to carry 13 players. I'd say the Jazz are in a bit of a bind.

One option... Harpring & Korver will both be free agents next year. Combined, their salaries total up to about $10 million. Can you say trade bait? Another option... can you interest Detroit, Memphis or OKC (the teams with a ton of cap space) in AK and his contract? That doesn't seem very likely... maybe Phoenix for Ben Wallace's contract? Or, if Booze opts in, maybe the Jazz try to move him?

What oh what will the Jazz brass do? Stay tuned... news will (should) be coming soon.

This is not good. I really think this will end out hurting the team. I think the Millers better dig their heels in and be prepared to pay big time luxury tax if they want to keep this team together.

However,

Is this team worth keeping together? Why are we in such a fuss about keeping the same guys who are consistently being eliminated in the early rounds of the playoffs? I think a change would be good. I love this team, but we need new blood and new heart that can take us to at least the Western Conference Finals.

Korver is not a part of that.
